Okay I've been working on a character design and in truth I still am. This is it so far... Oh and don't worry about inconsistencies in the face or some of the perspective being off. I've just working the design out.

So... I'm getting some prints ready to go back on etsy. The prints have been sat in a draw for the best part of a year and I needed to sort through everything that's ended up living in there with them. I've made one print of my Battle of Britain image in A3 size and I'm out of ink at the moment. I notice theres a small faint line marking the margin of the print so I decide to remove it. I don't like selling anything marked it doesn't feel right if the production quality is off even by a little bit.

Anyway, there now is a great big grey smudge in the margin... The print itself is unmarked within a margin of 250mm (it has a full margin of 570mm).
So why do you need to know all this? Well a print costs me money to make, and time to produce. In pounds it's around £10 for an A3 print and this price doesn't really bother me, unless I mark it. You see I can't sell this now so what should I do? Throw it away?

Well, that just pisses me off so I thought, "hey I'll give it away". I'll lose more money on postage though, but it will have some use so that's not too bad.

SO who wants it? It's first come first served! I'll need some sort of postage address emailing and I send stuff via signed postage.

P.S. I've added a Paypal donate button for anyone with more money than sense. I'm not above a little bit of e-begging :P

EDIT: the two things are unrelated by the way, I'm not asking for money for the print. Paying some of the postage would be lovely but it's not required. It really is free.

This is one from April 2010 it was an image that spurred on the skull girl image that was quite popular is I remember correctly. The skull girl concept is something I will be revisiting soon in something of a different way. I'll post those images after these ten are up.

Right here is the plan, I'll update the blog on Tuesday with a painting that has taken a lot longer than it should have done. It's looking quite good and I'm reasonably happy with it. After that I'm bashing out some concepts and scenes relating to the book, It's had quite a bit of restructuring in terms of plot over the past two months and I'm happier with the structure now. These images are only going to be one-two day images because I don't want to get too bogged down doing them.

Okay now that's decided here's something to watch, An interview with Sir David Attenborough. If you don't know who David Attenborough is... well it's an awfully big rock that you've been living under isn't it? :D In all seriousness though, he is one of the most charismatic, thoughtful people ever to work in broadcasting, with a level of integrity few people ever managed to attain. Richard Dawkins described Attenborough as "perhaps the most respected man in England", I find myself agreeing with the sentiment.

It took a little longer than it should have so sorry about that. As you can see it's a dystopian cityscape and I don't think I need to explain that so much. I have been asked to explain my working practices though so I shall attempt to do that on this post.

Beginnings

The first step is quickly thumb nailing compositions. This is to work out what images will work and which probably won't. After deciding this then comes actual fun stuff, working on the paper stretch (for anyone that doesn't know what stretched paper is I made a post some time back on this).

To start with I wet the paper again and started slapping a mix of Prussian blue, white and black on the paper with diagonal brush strokes. All the paint is acrylic in this image. Then more water as thrown down on the paper distorting the paint still further. It's important to mention that the tone has to be controlled when constructing a sky. The colours and shapes can be quite crazy but if the tone does not graduate from light to dark (light from the bottom up to darker tones) it will look wrong. Squinting your eyes while looking at the image will make this easier to see.
This graduating paint slop was then left to dry overnight.

Next Day

Drawing and painting the moons. These are painted up using short overlaid brush strokes. I used the moon Ganymede as a reference. The moon's colossal destroyed orbital city has been kept plain and lacks detail because the detail wouldn't be visible at that sort of distance. It sounds obvious but it's so easy to lose track of these things. It's also handy to understand a little physics when working with something like this. How would a destroyed orbital city look after say, five hundred years? My answer has been that he coalescing debris from the city has started to form an accretion disk around the moon. The lighting on the debris isn't how it would look but it make it easier to understand what was being portrayed.

Buildings

The buildings have been drawn up in pencil, shouted at, erased and redrawn several times. I then used the same technique when painting them, other than that I don't really have a great deal to say on how they have been made. I've pained the buildings light to dark in this. That means painting them in as a dark shape and working them lighter as I go until finishing with highlights. It's always fun designing destroyed things and it did take a lot of time trying to get right. I of course didn't "get it right" but I don't think it went all that wrong. My favorites are the tall pointy ones in the distance... Oh I know what I can mention in this part, the background needs to fade into lighter tones as well as being less detailed. It's for the same reasons as the lighter to darker tone in the sky, water. As light hits water molecules it reflects light. The greater the distance the more molecules getting in way the foggier it all gets. I have also included a little more colour as things move into the foreground.

Well things seem to have settled down a little tonight, perhaps we are reaching the end of this tempest?

I think there are going to be a lot of questions that will arise from this when it dies down a little. One that I would like answered is;
"What is the state of education in Britain"?
Perhaps a rethink of what people should attain from a "good education" is in order. I not saying that I think students don't work hard in education, that they preform poorly in subjects that they have been educated in. What I am saying is that it may be too goal focused. Students (you can swap this for pupils if you like) progress towards testable results, constructed course work and final grades but when do they learn about how to function in a secular society? At what point is being a well adjusted human being, capable of rational thought considered more important than grades? It is you know.To a lot of people school doesn't work, it isn't for them. Learning how to be a person is just as required as learning mathematics. Now I agree that parents should be responsible for the moral upbringing of their children, but is that happening?

Some people have suggested that this is the start of a revolution against a corrupt state. This is nonsense. There are those that see conspiracies in everything. Comments on you-tube that exclaim that these thugs rioting in our cities are somehow freedom fighters. Freedom from what? A welfare state that provides free housing and money to people without work? People that in some countries would stave to death in the same situation?

I do have to confess that I do find people that "milk" the system are more than annoying. The State has a responsibility to look after the well being of it's citizens, this is well known. What is less understood is that the citizens have a responsibility to maintain the State. It isn't, or shouldn't be about what free things one can "sponge" from the government. The world doesn't owe us any favors. The rights we enjoy in this part of the world are hard won. They are something to be proud of. What of our responsibilities? What do we owe for these rights that we have?
One thing I believe we owe is accountability for our actions and how our actions effect the world around us.

We have a moral duty to teach people what a moral duty is.

Let me know what you think in the comments. Even if you think I'm way off and an idiot. Though I would like your reasoned argument as to why this is.

The image so far. I've gone over the right one in photoshop for the whole of 3 minutes. There's a bit more work to be done painting these up, and then a good bit of digital. I'm also going to be going through the other images so far and making the street scene more holistic so as to tie the images together.

Thus far we have seen soldiers walking down this street accompanied by a crowd of people. A page or two is missing at the moment but in the images following the crowd scene, what is left of the pedestrians will disperse as a vehicle traveling the same road approaches. Two images are left not-drawn on this page. In these images the vehicle (lets call it an armoured ground car or AGC for now, any better names are welcome) will reach the T junction at the road and wait to be passed by troop carriers before making a right turn. At this point we'll see some more of this city and I will explain the next few images.

Well it looks like the shit's hit the fan. If you haven't noticed I've not been churning out as much stuff lately and it turns out that might be a sign of things to come. It's looking like some crazy goings on have been happening at work and I have the feeling I'm going to be working more hours and getting paid less per-hour on average. Hey everyone. Sometimes I feel like I haven't done anything... I think one of the most important things a person can do is make an impact on humanity, to make the world a better place, and not just the world, that's thinking too small :)

I was thinking of naming 5 things that have made an impact so here they are;

Darwin: The theory of evolution.
Max Planck: Quantum theory
Einstein: The theory of Relativity
Yuri Gagarin: First space flight (well it is today isn't it hehe)
and lastly The Human genome project.

One day I hope to add the unified theory to my list, maybe one day :)

I'm starting to put some things back in the etsy shop. I WILL be selling originals this time too and quite a number at that. Most of the stuff is from when I was at uni and those images will be ranging from between £5 to probably £75 for the best ones. I plan to put a couple of good ones on for about £25 though so look out for them as I'm doing that just for the hell of it :)
I'll be selling a good lump of the more resent work as well as the older stuff. It will need to be assessed so as to know what will be post-able but most of it should be fine.

Well this is the updated variation, I think it's looking better but ISO needed to be quite high to take the photograph so that's why it's grainy. I'm hoping Lemonhead head will do a better job than I did but she isn't in the best of moods these days so she might just stab me instead.

Hey everyone just a bit of an update, almost done this painting but I can't work on it at the moment as I'm a tad ill. I had to go to the doctors the other day, they said something about flu and that I might get pneumonia. Having diabetes means the flu is a lot more likely to kill me. As an addition to this I got a call today to let me know that they now think it's swine flu... Bloody pig flu.

Anyway I'm off to crash out in bed again.

Fog and Ice

I've always liked driving at night, I learnt how to drive in darkness and winter. I think that why I like driving in thick fog and ice. In the dark frozen fog bridges cast tall standing figures and the lights (where there are lights) on the motorway compose abstract triangular shapes. It was quite beautiful.
This was also playing at the time, it fitted the mood of the whole thing so well.

P.S. I'm not going to post this next painting till it's done now, I don't want to bore you all with a consent stream of updates on it, plus it might have more impact this way :)

I bought some new brushes (I seem to go through a lot of brush, I really should clean them better) I also bought a good bit of acrylic paint and some retarding gel. I'm about 30% through the Spitfire right now. As it stands at the moment this painting like my ninth symphony. I've fixed the proportions of the Spitfire so it's about right now. I'm painting the highlights with near pure white and the darkest shadows with Mars black. I've got all my reference on my machine... It might sound odd but, well, I'm at work tomorrow and this piece needs to be finished. I've had a weird feeling all day...

Okay here it is Pre-Spitfire, all thats left is to paint in the Spitfire all colour the whole image. I've also added a very, very quick colour rough of the image. The final colour will look a lot better than this one.

Read what I posted on my Update News, Edit mk2 post please. I'll add something big based on that.

Will be posting some more posts soooon!! Well tomorrow, its still not done I'm afraid. I haven't been getting much time lately. I've just about done both the heinkels on it know though so i will be working on the spit tomorrow :D

Edit: Okay so I almost forgot about the propellers and the markings also the fighter trails. Not too long now though.

Edit mk2: The heinkels are done, just going to wait for the paint to dry and then I'll put up a picture. I'll put up a large size detail image of the piece so-far. So if any one wants to have a go at digital colour in and mess about with it they can do... In fact there might be a prize for the best ones? Let me know what you think (this is going to one of them times where no one lets me know and I just do it anyway isn't it?) :P

Better Composition

Okay I'm now back on track, going to put the smoke on the engine. I've tried to unbalance the composition somewhat, creating a seesaw effect to enhance the sense of movement and disorientation. Is it working?

Okay so I wasn't too happy with the image so far so I've painted over most of it as I'm changing the composition back to what was planed in the beginning.

And now there's some sky. Its not as smooth as i wanted but I need paint retarder for that and I have got any.

It will look better when coloured and messed with digital (more than it is now I mean).
